A timer is an essential part of the YUM experience. The original YUM came with a physical timer, but we decided to make an app instead. Be sure to put your phone on airplane mode or “do not disturb” so that you are not interrupted.

Every card has an assigned time. When a new card is turned over, set the timer to the allotted amount of time. Allow some time for the speaker to gather their thoughts and feelings, and when they’re ready to begin, start the timer.

The timer is used to support you in taking your time, and not rushing. So while you are allowed to go over time, you do need to wait until the timer sounds before moving to the next turn. It’s okay to wait in silence, and you might find that other thoughts arise as you wait.
In short, the timer is set for the MINIMUM amount of time you can use.
